A proper day of sightseeing in Dunedin:
- At 10:30 we went on a tour of the Speights brewery. It lasted two hours and we saw everything from the historic barrel-making to modern pumps that fill a tanker truck in 15 minutes. After the tour, we were taken up to the board room for a taste. I expected an eight-once glass or some such small amount (by now I was PARCHED), but NO! we were each poured a glass and then our guide proceeded to fill three pictures with beer. When these were empty, she filled them again! We could have as much as we wanted. By 1:00 I was drunk.
- Next I had lunch in the octagon [this is the center of the city, there is a circle of steps, grass and some fountains] with the couple that I'd ridden with for two days one day ago. We were surrounded by tourists and business people on their lunch break. We could smell all the bakeries and I was ready to call it a day now (because of the beer).
- Well, we rallied for a self-guided walk through the heart of Dunedin. We saw all sorts of architecture: churches, [the] train station, boarding schools, etc. Dunedin is in a natural bowl so it was all up and down. Hard & hot but worth it.
- Then I rode out to Larnick's Castle. It was only 15 km but it was all uphill. The first part was STEEP. I started riding at 3 and the castle closed at 5. I went hard but it still took about an hour. The road wound up and around the peninsula to the house. The place is incredible, and I forgot to take pictures… it has a beautiful garden, a tower, a one-ton marble bathtub, four-poster beds, a huge ballroom and carved wood ceilings like some churches. Riding back to the campsite was a coast.
Now I'm watching the games. NZ really kicked in cycling.
Training Diary Comments: Hot. Knee just a little sore.
