So much happened today!
I started out feeling like dirt. It took me an hour to warm up. I didn't sleep very well. There were so many mosquitoes in my room at the Haast Hotel that I finally had to set up my tent in the room, it was awful. I must have killed 20 of 'em.
By the time I warmed up it was time to go up Haast Pass. It is steep! And beautiful! The river plunges over falls again and again. Towards the top are several beautiful places to picnic. The back side is steep but not paved at the top.
So many falls, New Zealand is the land of waterfalls. And they name them ALL. Not only was the TOP of the back side not paved, a LOT of the road down the pass was not paved... The road took me by two huge, beautiful lakes. [Lake Wanaka & Lake Hawea] And the road was gravel along BOTH of them. I probably went too fast and vibrated my bike pretty good, but these wheels are incredible!
This stuff is great to see but too big to go on film.
But I made it to Wanaka! What a place. A big lake, waterskiing, paraskiing, jetskiing, swimming, walking, a huge beach, pubs...
I might stay here; I can't wait to see the maze.
[ASIDE - there was a hedge maze a few miles down the road. The hedges were about 8' tall and it was NOT that easy to find your way out... Lots of fun]
Training Diary Comments: Mild, then hot. 8:30. I'm trashed!
