Course: Vance Creek Road Race - a few rollers, a moderate hill that kicked up just before the finish, some flats, a descent and then head wind and chipseal for several miles on the flats back to the rollers. 4.5 x 14 mile circuit.
Results: I bridged to the winning break of four at the top of the first hill but then flatted with one lap to go.
Comments: The whole team rode one lap of the course prior to the race to warm up. That felt pretty good. Alan got off right away with an Excel guy (I think it was still 'neutral'...?) and Franz and then Mark from Vision Tech joined them. they did not have a huge lead but it was growing very slowly so I waited for the top of the first hill when it was strung out a tad more and jumped really hard. Pat went after me and caught me about 100 yards before we got on. I went right to the front and upped the pace and it seems that's all Mark was looking for as he proceeded to essentially tow us around the course. The next time up the hill we dropped the Excel guy and Franz thanks to Mark's tempo. After another lap I went through a really bad patch and had to skip some turns on the front and almost thought I was gone once on the flats. Mark just rode me off his wheel... But then just as I started to come around, Alan started to fade. And then with one lap to go I flatted just before the top of the hill and Alan got dropped right at the top of the hill. Rats! By then I was almost back and could have made it over the hill fine. I'm guessing I would have hung on for third... So, we executed really well, we (Alan and I) just need more fitness and then it will stick. Got some sun - it was cool to be off the front again.
