So, it was nice at 6... I was warming up for about 30 minutes in short sleeves when at 6:30 the sky opened up and it poured. I went straight to the car and sat inside and waited for the start. Luckily, it cleared up just prior to the start so we did not have to wait around in the rain shivering. During the race it rained on and off, sometimes really heavily and sometimes not. Pacific Raceways is all about standing water so the first few times through the start/finish it felt as if I had a flat the resistance from the water was so great. I tried to get in one break and to start one myself a bit later but both came back. At the second prime, I jumped really hard at the top of the hill and Kerry Farrell (sp?) went with me. I just wanted to get something going and since it took him a while to catch me and since I ended up pulling all the way around the corner and onto the straight, I let him pull across the line for the prime point. When we saw we had a sizable gap, we put the hammer DOWN. The gap just kept growing and growing and by the finish we had at least two minutes. It was hard and I was the weaker rider for sure but he just wanted to stay away too so a couple times he took longer pulls so I could rest a bit. On the last lap I just led all the way from the top of the hill to the finish and he came around me but that was okay as I just wanted it to stick and I knew I was not up for a sprint.
Man, I was eating dirt and spitting water all night long, it was SO wet. With a lap to go I put my glasses away as they were so greasy with junk from the road that I could not see anything at all. Plus it was DARK with all the clouds. When I got to the car, it was not until I tried to pull my sweat pants up that I realized I had no control over my fingers... Imagine Martin with his pants around his ankles and he can't pull them up. Too funny. And I could not tie my shoe laces! The rest of me was okay, my hands were cold though. A bit of a retreat from spring but fun. And a super workout. |
