Lap one - Ouch! That first hill seemed really hard to me. It comes about five miles after the start and it was a brisk tempo for sure. Right away the field was cut in half; end of story if you were not in the front half. I was second to last over the top and killed myself to get back on.
Lap two - Not much different; rest as much as possible and then go like stink on the hill. As we were riding the back side of the loop, who shows up but Chris G. After a spectacular solo effort! Wow, that guy can motor. Just like the first time, I was able to crest with a couple of riders and we chased like mad to catch the main group. The first time we caught them just before we turned onto hwy 410. This time we did not until half way down the descent. People were futzing around and so I took one long pull on the descent to finally close the gap. Being big and heavy has its advantages. Not many, but this is one.
During the back side of lap 2, some guys trickled off the front. First it was someone I did not recognize, then it was Chris T from First Mutual, then Matt H from Excel, then Mark S from Vision Tech and maybe one other. I was not about to do much chasing for Mike E as I was just trying to survive and protect my 4th place in GC. Plus, the one time I did go to the front to pull, Mike told me to conserve my energy. You only have to tell me once! Once again, on the back side of the loop here comes Chris G. Damn...
Lap three - The hill on lap 3 was the 'easiest' of all four. We still had to chase at the top but we caught them. Once again we shelled Chris G on the hill and once again he caught back on. Solo. Amazing.
Lap four - This time it was tame until we got half way up the hill. Then it exploded (for me at least) even though we were riding for something like 5th. This time I could not go with the main bunch and struggled over the top with two other guys. We caught three more and then one more on the flats and since one of them was a B (the category I was in), I jumped the group with 200 m to go and finished a couple of seconds up on the rest. |
