Comments: Core felt good (except for the darn plank which I could AGAIN not hold for that 3rd 2 min set...) and spinning felt okay too but I think I went about 80 percent. Partly because I was sorta tired and partly because I wanted to still have something left tonight.

It was raining really hard until about 15 minutes before the start so not much warm up. And of course this Zoka guy attacks after the first lap and Dave H and Matt H go with. I had Bob W glued to my wheel and was not warmed up so well so sat in.

Zoka went right to the front. They had about five guys in the race today! I tried to jump clear a couple of time but I always had Darren or Bob on my wheel. About half way through the race the Zoka guy in the break got dropped and as we passed him, all the brown jerseys at the front of the field didn't change their pace one bit! Oh well, on the next hill I launched off the front as I _finally_ got into a position where there were no Excel jerseys directly behind me. I was away clean and pushed it but Bob put in a big effort and caught me. Once he got my wheel of course he wanted to rest so I had to keep pulling. And then his pulls were never that strong. After a short bit Mike B bridged up as well (that must have hurt) but it felt like I was still in good form. I did not give it my all tho as now it was Excel 2, ByrneInvent 1.

The field caught us (Zoka was chasing hard now...) with about 1.5 laps to go. I turned to Mick and told him not to be afraid to go early on the hill as the finish was at the top and I know from experience that if I'm too far back, I can't pass that many riders on the incline.

Darren and Bob were sitting pretty far back and so on the descent I figured I needed to move up and so did. A couple of guys pulled hard across the bottom which worked great for me as I was in 3rd. Just before the hill, Dab P came around me and her and this one other guy almost slid out! Luckily she saved it and then we were on the last hill.

Suddenly Mick took off like a rocket in this enormous gear on the right. Bob went with him and I jumped on the left. No one got on my wheel and as I hugged the left shoulder, Mick and bob were practically off in the grass on the other side of the road. :) Although I felt really good at the finish and was able to shift up twice, Mick and Bob had just that much of a jump on me and finished ahead of me. Oh well, I got 5th, Dave won and Mick got 3rd. And I know that I'm getting stronger and that one long ride (Saturday) and some gym work (Monday) prior to a hard one (Sunday) won't kill me for a race (today).

Oh yeah, after the race when I was totally soaked (it didn't really rain much but the standing water will kill you at PR) I locked my keys in the van. :( Shelley drove all the way down to rescue me and Mick let me sit in his car to stay warm and Dave made funny conversation as Margaret drove down to get him (his stuff was in the car too). You can't buy that sort of kindness, holy cow. :)
