When I signed up I was the 12th guy but by the time we staged it was about 25 riders - whew!
Michael P gassed it from the gun (we were neutral for about one mile until we got to the start/finish line) and it was more or less action, action, action until the break got away. I tired about three times to go, Darren P (Excel) tried once and then Dave H, Darren and RC R got a gap and were gone.
ASIDE - On turn one and two I almost went into the fields as I was coming in way too hot and this was my first time on this course. Sheesh.
Right as they rolled off the front I looked back _really_ wanting to go with them but someone fast was on my wheel so I figured better err on the safe side and let these guys make their own opportunities instead of (probably) dragging the field up to them. So I sat up and let them go. :(
That was about 1.5 laps into the race and for the next two laps Dan B and I patrolled the front jumping on anything that moved. It was pretty effective and nothing else went away. Then again, this was not the strongest field...
At first the gap was just 20-30 seconds; then it was 60 and finally it grew to about 90. By now I was _really_ antsy to get away from the bunch as I did not want to sprint with wet roads. I tried several times to get away during lap 3(?) but always 1) got company that could not help me out and was just barely hanging on or 2) was chased down by the team that was not represented in the break. Whatever. Finally, on the fourth lap I managed to pull about three riders away from the field.
As we approached the wood bridge I looked back and saw the field closing again and so I attacked the group I was in. This time I was away solo and the chasers gave up.
I went about as hard as I could hoping I might eventually catch the three in front. And for a while I was gaining ground! The motorcycle official kept me appraised of the gap the leaders and to the peloton which was great! But then I started to fade/tire and the leaders took all the time I had gained back out of me. :( By the finish I was about 1:30 behind the leaders and maybe 60 seconds up on the bunch. The closest I ever got the leaders was just under one minute. At least I managed to maintain my gap on the field - even though I am not flying by any means.
Dave attacked and finished alone for the win and RC took Darren in the sprint so 1st, 2nd and 4th! Nice. |
