Comments: For the first time in ages I headed up to Discovery Park for a session of adventX Endurance Cross Training and man did it kill me…

The group was SMALL but this workout is never easy. We did a warm up, ran down to the sand pit, did a six minute circuit, ran down to the beach (I took the long way), did a TWELVE minute circuit, did the timed 3/4 mile run along the water, ran up the stairs/trail, did lots of plank, ran up another road, did tons of core work and then ran back to the start and did some stretching. Fantastic stuff.

After a shower, lots of food and a bit of a rest, I picked up Todd M, a guy in Bellingham and we headed up to the Burnaby Velodrome for our first time on that track. It was SO cool.

When we first arrived they had no power so we stumbled around in the emergency lighting trying to see what this facility looked like. It's a big concrete ring with an inflatable tent roof. The infield is just bit enough for six volleyball courts, four of which are behind netting so they can play at the same time that riders use the track. There are also some bleachers for a few spectators and two tunnels that you need to use as there is no way to cross the track itself. Than goodness they were able to restore power by the time the class was scheduled to start.

The banking is sick. We were all there for the LTR (Learn to Ride series) and the instructor told us it was 49 degrees. You can literally stand on the apron, lean just a little to the side and reach out and touch the track surface. It was intimidating for sure. But also exciting! We could not wait to get out on the track and ride.

We were there for LTR 1 and 2 which consist of slowly working your way off of the apron and up on to the track surface and then finishing up with some paceline work and even some accelerations out of turn 2 or 4. There was a local racer that was obviously talented and they put him in the group that Todd and I were in and we clicked really well.

Riding all the way up (and it is about 25 feet up!) by the railing is amazing. First of all it's a serious 'climb' to get there entering turn one and three and then you are perched up there near the inflatable roof and it feels like you are staring off the edge of a cliff. Then it's a serious descent riding through turn two or four and you pick up some real speed. And the G forces are awesome. Just like Alpenrose, you can't really see all the way out of the corner when you enter. That sure adds to the excitement.

By the time class was done Todd and I just wanted more! I will need to go here this winter for sure.
Equipment: Raleigh Rush Hour Pro, spoked wheels, 49x15

This track being much smaller than Marymoor requires a smaller gear because you have less time to react and most of the accelerations are in the saddle. I usually ride a 49x14 and this seemed perfect.
Clothing: shorts, short sleeve undershirt, short sleeve jersey, knee and arm warmers, cap
