Comments: Weights were okay, I was not strong but got in some extra reps as the workout progressed. The ride in to work was also okay (or so I thought) but when it came to ride home...

oh
my
god.

My legs were SO done... I thought it would be sweet to ride over to Bellevue, meet Shelley and then drive home with her and I sorely underestimated the time it takes to get anywhere on a single speed bike and how thoroughly trashed I was. And my bike has a tiny gear. And platform pedals.

Shelley gets off at 5 and I left my work at about 4:10. At 4:40 I get to the WEST side of the I-90 floating bridge. Obviously I have about as much chance of making it to her office in Bellevue by 5 as Scott McClellan has of getting George Bush to admit that his book is factual.

So I call her on the phone, apologize and turn around to ride home. Christ. I had to walk up several hills... It's pretty steep climbing up from Leschi unless you want to throw in a massive detour and I was toast. And when you can't pull up on the pedals... it was a sad scene.

Comments: I woke up to a blaring alarm and promptly decided not to go to the gym.

The ride in to work was nice... T-shirt and shorts weather at 7:30 am is always a good thing.

It was just four of us on the walk today, Andy G and I chatted about hiking. I had one of those dreamy moments where I realize there is SO much stuff to do besides work... Better start playing the lottery I guess.

Comments: I had just finished up my little upper body routine when Thom showed up and I joined him for his ab workout.

Today was the first day I was able to ride to work in just a T-shirt and shorts. The way home was just fantastic... music in my ears, a hot day, the Seattle waterfront; nice.

Comments: I was dragging this morning on the way to the gym but Thom cheered me up and starting with the last set of leg press I felt much better. The walking lunges were actually really easy and I did the best I have ever done on the hack squat machine so not a bad day at all.

Today I worked from home and walked downtown to attend a free Netdesk Windows Server 2008 lab. I went through Freeway Park and all the water was turned on - I love that! Of course the stairs leading into the park on the east side always smell like urine but hey, it's brief.

All the food and drink at the event was donated by Microsoft and when I saw the beer in the cooler I was (very) pleasantly surprised. :)

Comments: What a great day! I was able to ride to work (which is always a plus), I went along on the iWalk and then when I got home Shelley and I hit the bricks for a short jog,

My legs did feel like garbage on the run tho... I have this problem where my skin tingles and itches - especially if the has some descents - when I'm not used to running and it takes me 5-10 outings to get rid of that feeling. This time of year I'm not exactly running a lot so today was kinda uncomfortable until the last mile. Oh well; it was fantastic out and Shelley showed me a really scenic route. Nice.

Comments: Today at work I joined the walkers. It's this group that goes out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during lunch and kinda power walks the campus and surrounding region. It was really fun.

On the way home I hit Interlaken with the music turned WAY up. Nice.

Comments: In the morning Shelley and did the Tom Wales Memorial 5 k and then in the afternoon we went on a tandem ride with Chance and Amy.

The walk was super cool, you need to wind all around and through Volunteer Park to get in three miles and the route takes you places most people - even park regulars I bet - just don't go. And incredibly who shows up at the start but Mickey Gendler! Mickey is a sponsor of my cycling team who had a terrible accident earlier and is still mostly paralyzed from the neck down. His spirit is amazing and it was so good to see him out there.

Then we met Chance and Amy and put their pedals on our old tandem, aired the tires and after a few practice laps up and down the alley did a loop around Mercer Island on tandems. I was really hoping they would have fun and at first I was not so sure but by the end it seemed to go a LOT better.

It would be so cool to have some regular tandem friends...

Comments: First - it was beautiful day. Yesterday was still quite cool and today it jumps up 15 degrees and the sun is out making people pink. I love it!

Second - at first I was bummed I did not have the strength to do better at the finish but I should be glad I made the break. Making the move is key and if you don't do that you never even have a chance to sprint for victory so upon reflection I'm pretty happy. :)

To keep things calm I took a trainer to the race and warmed up at the start/finish line. Totally removes all the stress and you can ride as long or short as you like and you don't miss the start. I have ridden this course many times so I just took one lap during a break in the action to see if there was anything new to see and there was not.

After spinning moderate gears for about 25 minutes I lined up near the start about 15 minutes prior to our departure. When they let us on the course I just went right to the start line and got a spot in the front row seeing as I knew the course and had already ridden it once. Almost everyone else took a lap and got staged several rows back. Plus, I had heard BRI talking about this 'early move' they were going to throw at everyone so I wanted to make sure I was up there.

At the gun I got a good start and hit the water tower in about 15th spot. Most of the usuals were up there including Matt H who drilled in on the 2nd lap in what has become his traditional warm-up routine it seems: go hard at the front.

There were a few surges and I went with pretty much all of them being paranoid I would miss the move. I was able to stay in the top 20 pretty easily and then after a few laps it happened. Someone jumped (I think it was BRI?), I followed and a few others joined us as we were gone. It was a good combo for sure; it was Chris T, Gavin G and Aaron from BRI, Mike B from Excel, Flavio R from Garage, two random guys and myself. With all the strong teams represented this was it and our gap slowly grew to 20 seconds and grew to about 40 by the finish. I think we got away about 10 minutes into the race...

Mostly we worked well together although Mike B did not pull. At first I thought it was because he had to bridge a bit farther than the rest of us to make it but after a bit I realized he was just not going to work. And it made sense, with three BRI guys it was their job to drive this. I was pulling quite a bit at first but then backed off when I knew we were not going to get caught.

Martin "I'm no sprinter" Criminale was trying to figure out my chances and with just over one lap to go it came. Gavin surged at the top of the hill and I went after him. In theory it was perfect. BRI had three guys so they were not going to chase and everyone else was alone so they watched each other. And we got away! But then Gavin died and I could not carry through for a full lap on my own.

Sure enough, just after we started up the hill for the last time Chris came roaring by with Aaron on his wheel. I was just able to catch on but had to expend a lot of energy to do so as they were going much faster. At the top of the hill I shifted up and accelerated as much as I could but no use... all could do was maintain my position. Gavin blew or gave up and so I was not last. :)

With the age limit at this event being only 30, it was basically a cat 1-2 race so I really was happy to be there in the break. And did I mention it was awesome to hear my teammates yelling my name all the way around the course? It was great! After getting home and cleaning up, Shelley and I went for a SUNNY, BEAUTIFUL walk down to Pioneer Square, along the water front and then back up the hill.

Comments: I went for a brisk (2 mile?) walk down the beach this morning and when I got back did some push-ups and some core. Then at 1 pm Shelley and I went for what was probably a 2 mile run along the beach in the other direction. Shit, it was hot and muggy... not the best running conditions.

It felt good to do something.
