Comments: Man I was sore from those leg exercises yesterday. Really sore. Like it hurt to sit on the toilet sore. Nothing like doing lunges after taking, oh I don't know, maybe a year off?

Anyway, spinning was great. We started out with 14 15 sec sprints! Then the class got hard.

Comments: Well, after my first two exercises I walked into the other room and bumped into Tom W who was also doing legs and finished his workout with him. We did three sets of hack squats on the machine and then three sets of lunges on the squat machine. And leg curls again. :)

I'm gonna try to focus on legs more Wednesdays... not heavy, just more exercises. Tom started out with the incline leg press and so this would add two exorcizes. That would be good I think.

Comments: Two words: weather window. That's what today was. Previously in Seattle it was majorly cold and tomorrow it's supposed to start raining. But not today; today was gorgeous.

For no good reason I decided to "ride big gears seated on hills to get strong" today... It was probably because Tom W showed up on his fixed gear which sports a 46x16, that's 78 gear inches to you and me. HUGE in other words.

ASIDE - I usually (read: always) ride a 42x18 which is 63 gear inches.

Not only was he riding it, we did some good hills today and he sat down for most of them. So, trying to be like Tom I stuck it in my 50x21 (71 gear inches) and tried to do likewise. It worked most of the time but not all the time.

Fun and tiring.

Oh, did I mention that doing mostly nothing over the Thanksgiving holiday does not help? Mark my words.

Comments: What an awesome day! Shelley, Lucca and I all went for a run along the south edge of San Juan Island and you cold see for miles and miles... Mt. Baker was out in force. This is the first time I can remember ever exercising with Lucca; ever. Unless you count that day last winter when we all did a bit of skate skiing in Leavenworth.

Years and years ago I rode this route on my mountain bike but as we looped back I saw that now bicycles at not allowed. :( It seems that mixed use nowadays really means you can mix it up as much as you want as long as everyone is walking.

We all thought it was going to be cold so we started with gloves, hats and at least two layers on. Right away I was warm, and after a bit off came the gloves and hat. Which was a nice surprise really. This road is pretty exposed and up on a ridge and it would have sucked to be whipped by the wind.

So the run was out on the road and back on the trail. I really like trail running, it's one thousand times more interesting than being on the blacktop and it's a much softer surface too which my body really appreciates. Except for the first steep section that goes up to the ridge this trail is fairly wide meaning that three people can walk side-by-side no problem. then you cruise along he ridge line and finally descend to the parking lot at the trailhead.

Comments: Boy, I was touting Cedar Grove as being hilly and it was not. :( I guess the last time I was on this road the pace was pretty hot and I was struggling to catch someone, eh?

Anyway, it was a super day! Not too cold, great company (Jim K, RC R, Todd M) and just rode and chatted. I stuck to the front along Jones Road and then got in a good effort all the way up Rainier. It pretty much gassed me but I felt like I needed it and I was feeling a LOT better than one week ago when I could barely hang on. To a bunch of guys on fixed gear bikes!

Today I rode with my GPS that I used in TransPortugal, I love that thing! But after about five miles the overly-complicated handlebar clamp slipped and I had to stuff it in my pocket. But you know what? It still worked!

Comments: Jim K was at the class today which makes a huge difference to me... Having friends there is such a boost.

The first part was normal/easy and made tracks to the beach pronto. And then raced right back up! It seems there are two timed runs they do in this class, one is along the beach and basically flat and about .75 miles (this one takes about 4.5 - 5 min) and the other is this trail that goes all the way from the sand up to the top of the bluff (this one takes about 5 min).

The first time we did this uphill run I managed it in 4:50 just barely going under Jim's record of 5:10. Today I somehow hauled myself to the top in something like 4:26 with Jim in second place at something like 4:44. God, half way up I feel like I'm breathing through one of those little straws they hand out to stir your coffee with at McDonalds... I hate that feeling.

Very satisfying though,I wonder if this is sustainable. :) Or if I'll implode and log a massive time the next Saturday I'm able to attend.

Just as Jim and I were congratulating ourselves it was time to hit the sand pit for 24 solid minutes of circuit training. And this is when it started raining. Half an hour later we are ALL covered in sand and soaking wet. And my legs are shaking from all the power hops and cone jumps and sandy hill sprints. The closest thing to a rest we got was the plank.

But I would not show up if it was not a great workout!  I'll see you in two weeks, for sure.

Comments: We had a different spinning instructor today, Robin. I know she means well but man, it's amazing what a difference there is between her and Abigail.

1) Robin never looks up and is always focused on whatever she is doing so no one ever gets any tips or encouragement!

2) She never explains what she is doing and if I wasn't an used to her style then I might not know what 'pickup' or 'hover', etc. meant.

3) She does not really do what she is tells us to do. I realize instructors get tired and can't always be sprinting when they tell us to do so but at least say you won't... I look to my spinning instructor as an example of what to do. One time she told us to keep our upper body still and not 'bounce' and of course she is bobbing all over the place. :(

Anyway, all my bitching aside, I still go to these classes as I think they are great. And really, you get out of them what you put into them, right? Nothing like an age-old adage to bring it all I home I always say.

Comments: The gym felt good until it cam time for core work, then I kinda lost steam and tapered off dramatically. It felt odd being here today and then I realized the last time I was at the gym was one week ago!

Today I just walked the Howe Street stairs two at a time. And although I walked them all faster than when we were walking them yesterday morning it felt 100 times easier. Running these is SO hard. Or I am SUCH a wimp and just like to whine.

I was hoping Tony C would join me today but no, Martin goes solo.

Crippled. That's how I felt on the first runner... Jim K is captain of this train and his deal is we start with a walking flight and then alternate running and walking until done. Each week we add one flight and each week the first running flight just slays me. Today was no different.

Howe Street goes up (and up and up and up...), crosses a street and then goes up some more. Only this last part is steeper and each step is longer. I swear, each time I start up that last section I feel like I'm on a leash and someone is holding me back or something. It's like I'm in the Matrix only I just get to move slowly and I don't have any special powers.

RC was there again - bless his heart. Doing these solo would blow. The more the merrier I say.

Today Jim timed us and I was amazed. We were doing the running flight in one minute flat and the walking flight in just a hair under two minutes. That's just up mind you, we're not super men.

I felt like dirt today. Nutrient-free dirt at that. Dirt from the sandy wasts of the Sahara; from the strip mines of the central US.

Last week, in spite of being crazy hung over, I had a decent ride. Today, after doing nothing but eating for two days I was hating it. At first I thought it was just the wind but I was suffering on the hills too.

Other than Jim K everyone else was on a fixed gear today. I kinda wish I'd known and would have done likewise but then again, all these guys ride a significantly larger gear (42x16, 44x18) than I do (42x18) and it would have been pretty hard to keep up. As it was I was not talking very much at all today. Gotta let it go I suppose.

Comments: On the ride today I went out with a few of the women that race on ByrneInvent and tried to teach them a bit about tactics. This is pretty hard when you are not actually racing and the next event is still months and months away but I did my best and kept the conversation limited to just the concepts of attacking and blocking. And it was fun! I tried to give them just two or three things to take away from the ride and I hope I succeeded.

I got to the indoor TT with _very_little time to spare... after the ride I had to run downtown to get my hair cut (because I'm getting MARRIED in two days!) and then it was back out to Sand Point way. My first time was around 15:20 which is not too bad but my second was around 15:50 which kinda illustrates my fitness at this time of year. Usually, as I get fitter, my second time gets closer to my first (and my first gets a little faster as well). But I was not going 100 percent either - by conscious choice. During the first event I was going maybe 90 the whole time and during the second one when I saw that I was going to be the fastest pretty easily I slacked off to maybe 85 percent (if you can accurately quantify this sort of thing...).

That means I have a little more in the tank which makes me happy. :) I heard the fastest time of the evening was around 14:55 which is attainable for me in a month maybe?

I probably _seems_ like I did a ton of work today but the ride was the slowest i have ever gone on that loop... no biggie at all.

This was great! Not only was Jim K there but Steve B and RC R showed up as well. Per Jim's routine we are alternating walking the stairs two at a time and running them two at a time.

Boy, Jim can just kill that first running flight and leaves me in the dust! My legs are screaming for mercy and he just bounds up. But then on the second runner are more-or-less equal and on the third I finished ahead of him. Sucking wind but ahead. :) This has GOT to do me some good.

Ouch... last night was too much for Martin and I paid for it today. I was at this dinner party and had cocktails, beer and then wine with dinner and guess what I did not have - water. It does not take a genius to do that math; I was hurting today.

On my way down to Leschi I swear I was trying to ride 'soft' so that the bumps in the road would not jostle my brain so much. Pretty hilarious in hindsight but I was totally serious at the time. When I arrived at Leschi everyone was chatting it up per usual and I just sat there silent and glum. I proposed my route and off we went.

The hills at the north end of Lake WA are really nice. They are all about one half to one mile long and the incline is just right meaning that you can actually ride up them kinda easy if you have/want to but they are steep enough so that you can get a good workout for sure. My goal next year is to be a better climber so I figured that a few hills all the time, even when I'm not going hard, is a good thing.

Finally, after some sweating and drinking my hangover subsided enough for me to carry on a pleasant conversation with the bunch. It was Jim K, Dan B, his coach/mentor, RC R and Todd M on their fixed gears, Charley D and a couple of others.

After hill mania we got to I-90 and everyone except Dan and one other guy pulled off. The three of us finished up the ride with a loop around the south end. This is where we got rained on but it was also some much needed flat riding.

The pace was mellow today and so I stayed at the front all the time. At first to KEEP it that way and then later just to stay there and somehow maximize the benefit of this ride in my little brain. Coming home on Rainier I did speed up and managed a good pull all the way up to Rainier Beach.

Equipment:

Bianchi Volpe, 38/50, 12-25

God this is a great bike! Heavy as hell (30 + lb. at least) but SO damn useful and comfortable and practical. The bonus is it makes my race bike feel like a feather come March. All part of Martin's secret training plan...

Dinner: A totally fantastic, over the top, themed dinner hosted by one of Shelley's friends with food provided by Zao. She and some friends purchased this meal at a fund raiser auction and it was a blast. Here are all the pictures. Did I mention that I had much too much to drink...? Shit yeah. Oh shit rather. Man, that hurt the next day.

I _love_ this class! I first participated in this about four years ago, did it for two years and then had to miss last year due to my f'd up back. But after six + months of solid core exercises I'm back and loving it.

We run, do some calisthenics, run some more, do push-ups, run some more, jump around in the sand, run a little race, do more calisthenics, keep on running... you get the idea. :) The group that shows up is HUGELY different in terms of skills and fitness and we have been breaking up into two groups so it's all good. Discovery Park is such a fantastic terrain garden and it's so beautiful that it's hard not to have fun.

Today we did our timed run (something the 'fast' group usually does each week) up this trail/flight of stairs. Two weeks ago my friend Jim set the record at 5:30 and I was told I ran it in 4:50. :) I have to take that time with a grain of salt though as the guy timing me was quite a ways beck behind me on the trail. And although he said he could see me clearly when I finished I'm not sure this time will be repeatable soon. I felt like I stepped into quick sand half way up this torture test (of _course_ I started too fast...) and even fell on some stairs as I passed some slower folks. Good god, you know that feeling when your breathing turns to rasping? I was there with at least two minutes to go.

Then I got to stand around and gasp for air as I tried to cheer everyone else on as they crested the trail.

It's interesting, I'm not a fast runner but if the run is sorta uphill and longer than a sprint I seem to do okay. Too long of course and I would fade next to the real deal.

There is this woman in the class with a slight Slavic accent and she is a machine. When it comes to all the circuits we do on the beach and push-ups, etc. she comes in first ALL the time. The only thing I can beat her at is this longer run.

Equipment: Running shoes and a wicking top! Sure beats all the gear you need to go for a ride...
