Comments: Shelley and I headed up to Sun Mountain Lodge for our first skate ski of the season. The conditions were not the easiest...

the Methow Valley had not been getting as much snow as usual but was starting to make up for it. They groom every night but by the time we got on the trails there was already about three inches of new snow in spots that had not yet been skied. That combined with the slightly warmer than ideal conditions meant it was slower going than I would have liked.

But hey, it was the first day and I was so excited to just get out there and confirm how much worse I was at skate skiing than any other snow sport. :)

Shelley and I skied down Sunnyside to the Hough Homestead and then came back via Beaver Pond, up the shortcut and then back to the lodge. On the way out I was oblivious to the slope of the trail and on the way home I realized it was going to be all slightly uphill. :( Here is where my lack of skills really showed. I was huffing and puffing and my arms got super tired and then shortly thereafter my legs gave out too. Kind of a microcosm of a marathon ski but sadly it only took me one hour.

Back at the lodge we rested a bit, I had a food bar and then I went out for a one hour private lesson.

We took off down the same trail, really skooting along and already all I could think of was the return trip. :( This time we went down the shortcut, took at left at the bottom and then a right on Little Wolf, out to the homestead and back along Sunnyside.

I got some good pointers but was not able to translate them all into improvements right away. I guess I have high/unreasonable expectations being a ski instructor myself and figure that if someone tells me what to do I should be able to do it right away but I was tired and some things do take a little time to master. So I did the best I could but on the last incline back to the lodge the instructor had to leave me behind as she had another class to teach. Oi. I really crawled up those last couple of hundred meters of trail...

All-in-all it was great to be back on skate skis, really. And the trail through the trees was SO beautiful. It was such a huge pain the ass to take the pole strap off of my glove, remove the glove, get the camera out, take a picture and reverse the procedure that I only got a couple of shots out on the trail. Oh well.

Because of the warming temps and the heavy snowfall, trees were losing their load. The common scenario was for the snow to fall off of a really high branch and it would strike the lower branches. Each time the snow hit another branch the cloud of powder would grow and by the time it landed on the ground it looked like a tiny avalanche was hitting the trail. Shelley and I saw this happen a couple of times and then on our way back we got caught right in the middle of one such dump.

Crazy! I was totally blind for a bit. Snow was swirling around all over the place and I just kept skating hoping I was not headed off the trail or into the back of Shelley. When we both emerged we were totally white and laughing! What a blast. It would have been great to ski through that while filming a movie.

Comments: Oh man... last night was Shelley's office holiday party and I had too much red wine. I'm convinced the wines with more tannins have a wicked kick and this experience does nothing to convince me otherwise. My mouth was totally dry, my head felt pretty delicate and my stomach was not the most stable it has ever been.

Anyway, today it was Jim K, RC R, Ryan D and Greg K. Greg had THIRTY FIVE pounds of weight in his backpack. Jesus.

As usual we alternated walking with running and on flight number eight we did the old up two, down one. Just mixing it up. :) I felt like dog doo on the first runner but it did slowly get better. By the third runner I was feeling as good as I was going to today; maybe 70 or 80 percent? We paused quite a bit between flights today, probably because we all needed it. The last runner was pretty weak.

Once again Ryan was leading the way at the end of the workout - nice going Ryan.

Comments: Oh. My. God.

Today showed me how much damage my laziness during this snowy cold snap has caused me...

The spinning class was pretty hard. All of the 'sprints' were 40 seconds and even at the start when I was fresh I could only put out about 70 percent of what I would like. By the end of the class I was somewhere around 50 or 60 percent...? Pitiful.

Right after spinning there was an ab class. It was hard but not unbearable. Except for the plank (which killed me) I was almost able to do everything that the instructor asked.

Right after that was an indoor boot camp class. You know, jumping jacks, jumping around, dumbbells, lunges, presses - general exhaustion. I had grabbed two eight pound dumbbells and after just one exercise I realized they were WAY too heavy. Too late. My movements kept getting more and more abbreviated and I was realizing that water and six Shot Bloks were not nearly enough to fuel me for this workout but there was never a break that was long enough for me to grab a drink. :(

I survived. And walked back to the car very slowly.

Luckily no pain after I stopped running.

Jim and I were able to talk the entire time so it was not a phenomenal workout but good to stay in the routine for sure. And Jim is great company, we usually never talk about cycling.

Comments: Adrian H was riding the first CycleU indoor TT heat for a power workout in his 53x12 the entire time...

I jumped out to a slight lead but he caught up pronto and then we were neck-and-neck for the last 12 minutes! I swear, we were never more than 10 m apart and usually less than 5. Ouch. He kept it steady and I was able to surge just a tiny bit on the last climb and barely beat him.

In the second heat I did not recognize anyone and so was hoping for an easier effort. Wrong.

These two guys were all over me and I did not even get my usual head start out of the blocks. We 'dropped' one guy about half way through but the other guy and I were even more closely matched than my battle in the previous heat if that is possible. It felt like every time I looked up at the screen my number was flashing between 1 and 2. Again, I was able to surge a tiny bit more than this guy at the finish (we were both going all out this time!) and got him by the smallest of margins...

A VERY good workout. And I have never spent this much time in the 53x12 on these indoor events.

Today I took the CamelBak with a full 100 oz bladder and two five lb weights to the stairs and just walked them. I could tell right away that I was not 'fresh' but it got slightly better after two flights and then got harder again after four. :( Luckily it did not keep getting too much harder.

I was solo until number eight when I spied Ryan D running up - way to go!

My iPod died after four flights, I hope it just ran out of juice.

Comments: The weather was great and someone even swept the stairs! Nice.

Today it was Jim, K, RC R, Ryan D, Nelson J and myself. We did seven flights alternating walking and running and then on number eight we did Jim's patented 'two up down one' routine which is kinda like doing two flights in one. Then we walked one more.

After my run on Sunday I was tired but did all right. I could definitely feel my knees a little on the way down and on the runners I was able to go about 80 percent but that was all. At least I did not fade too much near the top. :) Man, keeping up with Ryan is a chore - that guy has long legs.

Comments: Well, today was my longest run ever! Was it fun? Kinda... but it was a relief when I was done too. More a sense of accomplishment than literally fun.

After pigging out and drinking a ton of cheapo Chianti last night (for no good reason - hence the breakfast Advil) I started with Shelley and Mike (Shelley's brother in-law) and we ran the first two miles together. At that point we met Shannon (Mike's wife) and dropped off our extra clothing. It was super nice of her to help us out like this and super nice to be able to ditch some things... The weather forecast had predicted significantly colder temperatures and we all had on more than we needed. After that we all ran at our own pace.

Ha! A few days ago I had envisioned trying to maybe run eight minute miles  but as we pulled out of the start I had to perish that thought right away. There was SO much traffic that you were constantly weaving left and right and slowing down and speeding up to hit the gaps in the crowd. It was actually sort of fun and I treated it like a real life version of Frogger. You really had to stay on the ball or you might bump into folks as you ran by. I was constantly on the sidewalk and back in the street and then back up on the sidewalk and then on the center line, you get the idea. Thank god they had closed down one entire half of the strip so we usually had three lanes to run in.

I ran by some of the most interesting people. Of course there were TONS of running Elvi, this is actually an official category for this race! Stands to reason I guess - it's in Las Vegas after all. Someone told me there were around 200 total. Most people went for the late Elvis look (huge sideburns, white suit, big glasses, etc.) but some exercised a bit of artistic license and there was one dude that looked like Super Elvis and was running in a red suit with a cape. :|

Of course there was 'shirtless guy' and women (and men) that looked like they had just stepped out of some shishi health club and had no business doing this run. You know, way too tan and wearing really expensive sweat suits - I mean who runs in an actual sweat suit? One woman looked like a cartoon caricature of a woman, her lips and boobs were sooo inflated.

The crowds did not thin out significantly until the half way point! By then you could more or less run as fast as you wanted. You still had to watch out but there was plenty of room on the road. As I turned left here where the full marathon goes straight some guy doing the long route turned to us and yelled, "Cheaters!" :)

I felt pretty fine during the first half and for several more miles but at around mile 10 or 11 I started to slow down. And then with maybe one mile to go I felt like I slowed down again. :( Up until about mile 11 no one had passed me and so I was motivating myself by reeling in all these 'rabbits' but then this one guy that I had passed at mile seven passed me back at mile 11. Poop.

I was almost able to hang (read: keep him at 50') for a while but then he started to kick at mile 12 and I faded some more. Then all these other people started accelerating too and I think something like 10 more went by me. I consciously tried to pick it up like three times but each time it was pretty short lived and I had to back off pronto.

It was okay though, I had no expectations and just wanted to finish without killing myself. Along those lines I thought I was doing fine but with two miles to go my left knee started bothering me a  bit. Not real pain  but it did take a bit more zip out of my already somewhat depleted zippity-do-da.

God, that last corner took for EVER to arrive. You could see the casino where the run started and where it would finish with almost two miles to go and it just never got any closer. I kept looking down the road thinking, "Okay, this next intersection will be the last left turn..." and of course it wasn't. I had to re-adjust my expectations of when I was going to finish at least twice.

I got water four times, twice on the way out and twice on the way back. I walked for all the stops except for the last one where I tried to drink while running and managed to get my mouth wet but mostly I just got my shirt wet. They were serving water and Gatorade but I just took water. Maybe Gatorade would have helped? I only took two gulps at each water stop, I was paranoid about getting a side ache and in hindsight it was probably the right amount as I never got very thirsty and never got a cramp.

Looking back I am extremely pleased with my time - holy cow. We ran a very casual first two miles and then I had to dodge several thousand people and then I tapered off towards the end so I must have been running 7:30 or faster most of the time when I was alone. The mellow start combined with the human slalom totally threw me off and I had absolutely NO Idea what kind of pace I was running. And I did not look at my watch at all because I figured it wasn't worth it - I just did whatever felt right.

Immediately after crossing the line I had to do some stretching. My calves were pretty tight to say the least. On the upside as soon as I stopped running my left knee stopped bothering me. Nice. And now, four hours later as I type this it also feels fine.

So what did Martin learn today?
- It's okay to take it easy and simply enjoy yourself and to run with friends.
- If you don't want to fade at the end it might  be a good idea to do some longer runs...! I think they call it 'training'.
- Don't try new stuff on race day. I ran in new socks and although my feet were really comfy all day when I took my shoes off one toenail on my right foot was all bruised. I hope I don't lose it.
- Running is harder than it looks. Although it's easier for me now than when I started a few months ago the guys that make it look effortless and natural have done it for ages.
Equipment: new Drymax socks (I love 'em!), Nike Fit Dry shorts, long sleeve Capilene under shirt, short sleeve OR outer shirt

I was okay but could have worn less like just one short sleeve shirt or just a sleeveless base layer under my shirt.

Comments: Shelley, Mike, Shannon, Zack and I went for a very nice stroll through the Red Rock Canyon. After eating some lunch we walked this short loop up to a waterfall that was fantastic. The trail wound through and under rocks, up stairs and was just what makes this kind of area a blast to be in.
